Participants learned to:

  • Recognize different cancer treatments, surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and their consequences and complications.
  • Understand how the therapist role and intervention can improve, attenuate the effects of the cancer treatments and improve patient's quality of life.
  • Understand the Manual Lymph Drainage techniques for Head and Neck Lymphedema.
  • Identify the different types of garments available for Head and Neck Lymphedema.
  • Identify wound type and depth of involvement based on understanding of normal tissue anatomy.
  • Describe elements to include in documentation and the essential elements to accurately describe a wound.
  • Discuss factors that are important to improving wound healing.
  • Identify appropriate dressings to manage the bioburden and moisture content of a wound.
  • Recognize the types of wounds commonly seen in lymphedema patient and determine the appropriate plan of care.
  • Understand the difference between the fluid and solid states of limbs with lymphedema.
  • Understand the progression from fluid to solid states in chronic lymphedema.
  • Identify the different surgical options for lymphedema.
  • Identify the appropriate selection of surgical lymphedema options.
  • Understand the integration of surgical options for lymphedema into a comprehensive lymphedema treatment system.
  • Identify the links between obesity and lymphedema.
  • Understand the mechanisms that result in adipose proliferation in the presence of lymph.
  • Recognize the urgency of addressing weight management in a comprehensive lymphedema program.
  • Share an evidence-based program proposal.
  • Identify the origins of our healthcare coverage relating to the reimbursement of lymphedema treatment services.
  • Identify 2014 changes to Medicare delivery and reimbursement, issues affecting lymphedema treatment delivery and changes anticipated for 2015.
  • Recognize key therapy billing and coding issues, functional limitations coding problems, and therapy cap and exception information.
  • Identify a deep understanding about lipedema including symptoms, classification, stages of lipedema and complications.
  • Develop an understanding of the psycho-social challenges to the lipedema patient and tools to address these challenges.
  • Identify supplements and diet that have been shown to be helpful for the lipedema patient.
